We implement a thoughtfully designed, eclectic curriculum that not only meets but consistently exceeds Arizona State Learning Standards. Our approach draws from a variety of proven methods and resources to create a rich, engaging learning experience for every student.
Small groups are an important part of our daily classroom routine, allowing us to provide targeted support and meaningful learning experiences for every student. We place a strong emphasis on letter sounds and relationships, building on students' prior knowledge to strengthen both phonics and overall reading skills. As a result, students continue to grow as independent readers, gaining confidence and fluency. This is the final year in which our primary focus is on "learning to read", laying the foundation for a lifelong love of literacy. We also introduce read-alouds of beloved stories such as Owl at Home, Frog and Toad Are Friends, Frog and Toad All Year, and Frog and Toad Together.
Math concepts are introduced during whole-group instruction and then reinforced through independent practice. Students continue to build upon previously learned skills, using that strong foundation to deepen their overall understanding of mathematics. Math facts are practiced and mastered to promote fluency and confidence, and students are introduced to multiplication as they develop essential problem-solving strategies. We follow the "I do, we do, you do" approach to learning, gradually guiding students from teacher-led instruction to collaborative practice, and, ultimately, independent work. This structure helps build both confidence and independence, empowering our students to take ownership of their learning.
Throughout the year, simple family-led projects are offered to invite families into their child's learning experience. These activities give students the opportunity to teach and share what they've learned while creating meaningful memories together at home. Students are then encouraged to bring their projects back to school, where they can proudly display and present their work to their classmates - building confidence, communication skills, and a sense of accomplishment.
We deeply value the time our students spend both in the classroom and at home. Maintaining a minimal homework policy allows them the freedom to simply be children - an essential part of their overall growth. By preserving this balance, we support not only their academic progress but also their social, emotional, and creative development.
Our students will continue moving right along with familiar curriculum in all subjects. One of the biggest advantages of attending a Private First Grade is the lower ration of students to teacher. This lower ratio allows us to meet each student where he or she is and to be able to provide more one-on-one teaching opportunities. Other advantages of our program are that breakfast, lunch and snack are offered at no extra cost and we offer before and after school care.
